SMK – Statens Museum for Kunst

This guide to SMK, the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, follows Johannes Rump, an engineer who spent two decades buying Matisse, Picasso, Braque and Derain while Denmark still found them scandalous, some pieces sourced from a fellow collector, Christian Tetzen-Lund. In 1923 he offered his whole collection to the museum, and its director, Karl Madsen, turned him down. It traces what changed by 1928, when Rump offered again, and how sixteen Matisse paintings alone finally came through the museum's doors.
