Kunsthal Charlottenborg

This guide to Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen opens in 1891, when a group of young painters including Johan Rohde and Vilhelm Hammershoi walked out of the palace's jury-run exhibition for good. It traces the building's earlier life too, from a gift King Christian the Fifth made to his half-brother Ulrik Frederik Gyldenlove in 1669, through the queen mother Charlotte Amalie who gave the palace her name, to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts moving in decades later. Painters still submit work to the exhibition wing built beside the palace in 1883.
