Werksviertel-Mitte

This guide to Werksviertel-Mitte in Munich starts in 1949, when food maker Werner Eckart dried mashed potatoes into flakes under the brand Pfanni and built a factory here that fed postwar Germany millions of dumplings a year. It follows the factory through its industrial heyday and its sudden 1996 closure, and into the strange second life the empty halls found as nightclubs. Kunstpark Ost, then Kultfabrik, packed more than twenty five bars and dance floors into the old dumpling factory.
