This guide to the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich centers on a small clay drinking cup, painted around 530 BC by the Athenian potter Exekias, showing pirates who seized a beautiful stranger on a Greek beach and got far more than they bargained for once wine and vines overtook their ship. It follows Exekias's unusual choice to fill the whole interior of the cup with one scene rather than a small medallion, and how King Ludwig the First bought the piece in 1841 for the antiquities hall being built around you.
