Jewish Museum

This guide to the Jewish Museum in Munich opens in June 1938, when a rabbi gets a knock at the door and only a few hours to save his community's holiest objects before the wrecking crews arrive, on an order signed by Adolf Hitler himself. It follows the grand synagogue that had stood since 1887, the deal that tore it down, and historians' view of the demolition as a quiet rehearsal for the far louder violence of Kristallnacht that November. For decades nobody knew where the synagogue's stones had gone.
