Hofgarten

This guide to the Hofgarten in Munich centers on the morning of February 18, 1943, when a caretaker at the university reported a young woman named Sophie Scholl for distributing leaflets, and what happened to her, her brother Hans, and their friend Christoph Probst in the days after. It follows the tiny student group they belonged to, the White Rose, and the thousands of pamphlets they mailed against Hitler's regime. Look for the black granite memorial at the garden's northeast corner, carved with lines from their own words, set among arcades and a domed pavilion that Elector Maximilian I laid out three centuries earlier.
