This guide to the Jerusalem Synagogue in Prague opens with a locked, boxed-up room guarded by men stripping a people of everything they owned during the nineteen forties. It traces back to the eighteen nineties, when city planners tore down three older synagogues in the ghetto and Viennese architect Wilhelm Stiassny raised this Moorish-arched replacement, first named for an emperor's jubilee, then renamed Jerusalem after independence.
