Fusterlandia

This guide to Fusterlandia in Havana starts in the Jaimanitas fishing village around 1990, as Cuba's Special Period emptied shelves and one local artist, Jose Fuster, found himself holding money from ceramics and paintings sold in Europe. It follows his decision to pour that income into his own crumbling house first, covering it in shards of broken tile and plate, then into his neighbors' homes, on one condition: he got to cover them in mosaic too. Word spread from house to house long before the neighborhood picked up its now-famous name.
