This guide to Egipto, a hillside barrio in Bogotá, follows Jaime Roncancio, known as El Calabazo, once the leader of the Decima gang that fought rivals for control of these streets. It traces the neighborhood's gang wars between 1990 and 2002, and how Jaime and other former gang members now lead walking tours through the same alleys, pouring homemade chicha in living rooms where funerals were once planned. Along the way, look up at the murals painted on the hillside, marking the spots where the old violence once played out.
