St-Viateur Bagel

St-Viateur Bagel's wood-fired oven in Montreal's Mile End has burned since 1957, when Polish Holocaust survivor Myer Lewkowicz opened the shop after learning the trade at a nearby bakery. This guide follows that history through Saul Restrepo, the baker who has worked its board since 1981, and to 1974, when a young employee named Joe Morena, nicknamed Yosel, became a joint owner. It also traces the decades-long rivalry with another Mile End bagel bakery whose own oven dates back even further.
