Palácio Tiradentes

This guide to Palacio Tiradentes in Rio centers on the Salao do Cafe, a small coffee room where deputies of the old Chamber of Deputies unwound between votes, and the 1925 commission that asked painter Eliseu Visconti to decorate its ceiling. It follows Visconti's original sketch of the republic's inauguration, filled with the allegorical women that ran through nearly all of his work, and the building commission's objection to it. The commission felt women had no place in that scene and sent him back to his studio to try again.
