Prater

This guide to the Prater in Vienna follows the giant Ferris wheel from its 1897 construction through wartime fire and postwar rebuilding, into 1949, when director Carol Reed brought his crew to film the climax of The Third Man. It centers on Orson Welles, playing Harry Lime, and his conversation with his old friend Holly Martins above the ruined fairground. You'll also hear how much of that famous scene was actually shot later, in a London studio, rather than on the wheel itself.
