Augarten

This guide to Vienna's Augarten follows the huge flak tower still standing in the park, from a children's fire that set off leftover anti-aircraft shells in 1946 to the frantic Nazi construction that raised it in the last months of World War Two. It traces the postwar effort to demolish the tower and why the city gave up and left it standing instead. Emperor Joseph the Second first opened these Baroque avenues to ordinary Viennese in 1775, and Mozart is said to have led morning concerts in the hall nearby.
