Gaisberg

This guide to the Gaisberg above Salzburg opens with a puzzle: forty years separate the first and last Gaisbergrennen hillclimb race, but nowhere near forty races were run in between. It follows Baron Franz von Preuschen's inaugural 1929 race, the 1930 broadcast that turned this mountain road into Austria's first live sports radio program, called by Wolfgang von Karajan, brother of the conductor, and the twenty-five thousand spectators who lined the switchbacks in 1957 to watch Porsche and BMW battle up the hairpins. Walk the same curling road today, past cyclists instead of race cars, and you can still trace where the racing line used to run.
