Kapuzinerberg

This guide to a hillside villa on Salzburg's Kapuzinerberg follows the writer Stefan Zweig, who climbed the hill in the nineteen-teens, bought the plot in 1917 and built the house he called his private world above the rooftops. It traces what happened after he fled Austria in the 1930s and agreed, from exile, to sell the villa for a fraction of its worth to a local family, and what the Nazi authorities did to the payment still owed him. His wife's jewelry, silver and library of six hundred books went under an auctioneer's hammer in Vienna a few years later.
