Northcliff Ridge eco park

This guide to Northcliff Ridge eco park in Johannesburg opens with a 1933 aerial photograph that revealed dozens of stone-walled enclosures ringing the hilltop, later identified by archaeologist Revil Mason as Iron Age cattle kraals roughly three hundred years old. It reaches back further to stone tools scattered on the ridge's eastern slope, left by hunters and gatherers up to two hundred fifty thousand years ago, and recalls the ridge's old name, Aasvoelkop, for the vultures that once nested on its cliffs. The footpath underfoot was won by a local Rotary club after years of negotiating with the city.
