Delta Park

This guide to Delta Park in Johannesburg begins in 1971, when antiques dealer Norman Bloom buried his mother, Florence, an avid birdwatcher, and turned to the Witwatersrand Bird Club with his brothers to build something in her memory. It follows how that grief became the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary by 1975, and Norman's separate fight to save the derelict Art Deco Delta Sewage Works next door, reopened in 1978 as an environmental centre.
