Tụy Tiên Đường Minh Hương 明鄉華先堂

This guide to Tụy Tiên Đường Minh Hương in Hoi An follows a Ming dynasty official who chooses exile over surrender after the Qing conquest, boarding a boat south and, somewhere on the water, changing his own name. It traces the ten former officials who fled here in the late sixteen hundreds, married into Vietnamese families, and built new lives as merchants, plus the descendants who founded their own village apart from both the Vietnamese majority and the newer Chinese arrivals. The narration follows the hall itself from its founding in seventeen twenty-five to its move to this spot in nineteen oh five, carried here piece by piece by carpenters from Kim Bong.
