Trúc Bạch Lake

This guide to Trúc Bạch Lake in Hanoi returns to October 26, 1967, when a Navy pilot's plane was hit above the city and he ejected, breaking bones as his parachute snapped open before he hit the water below. That pilot was a young John McCain, who would spend the next five and a half years as a prisoner of war nearby. Look toward the western shore, along Thanh Nien Road, for the small monument marking the spot.
