Moore Theatre

This guide to Moore Theatre in Seattle opens in 1907, when developer James Moore poured a fortune into a vaudeville house paired with a hotel, indoor swimming pool and Turkish baths, betting on tourists who never came for a fair that got postponed two years. It follows the theatre's opening night with a comic opera called The Alaskan, and the vaudeville acts, minstrel shows and boxing matches that filled its stage through the 1920s and 30s. Look up at the balcony beside you, once reached by its own separate staircase built to segregate Black patrons, a history the theatre no longer hides.
