Mennello Museum of American Art

This guide to the Mennello Museum of American Art in Orlando tells of Earl Cunningham, a self-taught painter who ran a Saint Augustine curio shop for decades and refused to sell almost any of his four hundred dreamlike coastal paintings, guarding them in a back room under a sign reading these paintings are not for sale. Locals called him the Dragon of Saint George Street. Collector Marilyn Mennello was the one person who ever managed to talk him into parting with a single painting, a scene of the coast crowded with Viking ships and schooners that no one had ever actually seen.
