Audubon Aquarium

Outside Audubon Aquarium on Canal Street in New Orleans hangs ChamäleTuna, a wall of programmed light shaped like a tuna, built by Los Angeles artist Ilya Sobol to read the colors people wear and reflect them back after dark. The guide follows Sobol's own description of the piece as a reminder that individuality contributes to something larger, and traces the building behind it, which opened in 1990 with a plain glass entrance before a forty-one million dollar rebuild raised the crystalline glass volume standing there now. Around the corner, a muralist named Patrick Maxcy painted an animal scene across the Canal Street wall, arguing that even a wall could perform.
