Ocean Drive

This guide to Ocean Drive in Miami opens on the morning of July 15, 1997, as fashion designer Gianni Versace walks back from a coffee shop toward his mansion at Casa Casuarina, an ordinary errand on an already famous street. The house itself, Casa Casuarina, was already strange: built in 1930 for a wealthy eccentric in Mediterranean Revival style, all carved stone and wrought iron, before Versace bought it in 1992 and remade it into a private palace with a gold-tiled pool.
