Deering Estate

16701 SW 72nd Ave, Miami, FL 33157, USA

Mediterranean Revival stone mansion built fireproof to guard a millionaire's art collection, on a wild coastal estate.

This guide to the Deering Estate in Miami follows industrialist Charles Deering, who watched Chicago burn in 1871 and vowed his own winter home on this wild coastal estate never would. In 1922 he had architect Phineas Paist build a concrete and limestone fortress two feet thick to protect his collection of paintings by Goya, Sargent and Degas, and refused to allow a single stove or kitchen inside. Deering died here in 1927, inside the fortress he built against flame.
