Greynolds Park

This guide to Greynolds Park opens on Easter Sunday 1968, when a little-known San Francisco band called the Grateful Dead climbed onto a flatbed truck and played a free four-hour show for a crowd that overwhelmed the two deputies sent to watch it. From there it reaches back to the site's earlier life as A. O. Greynolds's limestone quarry, handed to the county when his rock business collapsed, and to the Depression-era work crews who buried the old mining equipment under the mound you can still climb. The guitarist from the opening act, Blues Image, said the afternoon felt oddly like church.
