This guide to Cheers in Boston opens on an afternoon in 1981, when Eddie Doyle was pulling pints in this basement pub and three television writers walked down the steps with a camera. It traces how the pub, opened in 1969 by Thomas Kershaw as an English-style tavern furnished with pieces shipped over from Britain, came to catch the eye of a show hunting for the perfect American bar. Kershaw signed away the rights to film the exterior for one dollar, keeping the interior for his own regulars.
