Xinbeitou Historic Station

This guide to Xinbeitou Historic Station follows a wooden Japanese-era train station marked for demolition in Taipei in 1988, and the architect Lee Chung-yao, who called a theme park with an unusual proposal instead of joining the protests. The station first opened in 1916 to shuttle hot-spring tourists, its wooden frame joined with mortise and tenon. Look up at the eaves for the carved brackets and round dormer windows added in a 1937 expansion.
