Taipei East Gate (JingFu Gate)

This guide to Taipei East Gate traces the gap between what you see today and what actually stood here in 1884, when the gate was one of five entrances through the city's new wall. It follows the fortified stone-and-brick structure built to withstand attack, its gun ports and earthen rampart, through the demolition of Taipei's city wall under Japanese rule and the widening of the roads around it. The stone foundation beside you is largely original, laid with rock hauled in by boat from nearby quarries.
