Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque

This guide to the Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque in Istanbul follows Giovanni Dionigi Galeni, seized as a teenager by Ottoman corsairs in 1536 and enslaved at the oar, who converted and rose through the fleet that once held him captive. It traces his role commanding the Ottoman left flank at the 1571 Battle of Lepanto and the sultan's reward that made him Kılıç Ali Pasha, then his decision to build his mosque on reclaimed land at Tophane with Mimar Sinan. His tomb stands in the domed structure just beside the mosque.
