Malay Heritage Centre

This guide to the Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore traces the palace built for Sultan Hussein Shah, the prince Raffles brought out of exile in 1819 to sign the treaty that founded the trading post. It follows Hussein's uneasy bargain with the British, his eventual departure for Melaka, and the descendants who kept living on these grounds for generations after him, including his grandson Tengku Alam, for whom the current building was raised around 1890.
