Fort Canning Park

This guide to Fort Canning Park in Singapore starts underground, in the bunker where Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival gathered his officers on the morning of February 15, 1942, as water and ammunition ran short on every front. It then climbs six centuries into the hill's earlier life as Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill, sacred ground for Singapore's Malay kings, where reservoir workers turned up a cache of fifteenth-century gold ornaments in 1928. A shrine to the last ruler of fourteenth-century Singapore still stands near the summit.
