This guide to the Moscow House of Photography traces Alexander Rodchenko, the radical nineteen-twenties photographer whose tilted, geometric images were denounced as bourgeois formalism, forcing him to publish a formal confession in nineteen thirty-five. It follows what came next: propaganda work, expulsion from the Union of Artists in nineteen fifty-one, and the slow restoration of his name through his wife's efforts. Curator Olga Sviblova later founded Russia's first state institution devoted to photography here, on Ostozhenka street. His negatives sat half-forgotten for decades before that.
