Back in Portugal, that fortune turned into an art collection of over eight hundred works, Picasso and Warhol and Bacon and Dalí among them, valued by Christie's at over three hundred million euros. In the following years he borrowed close to a billion euros from three Portuguese banks, with the paintings themselves pledged as the collateral.
