Church Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha

This guide to the Church Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Velha in Lisbon begins with Queen Leonor, once called the richest princess in Europe, who lost her husband King John the Second and both of her sons by the late 1490s. It follows her founding of Lisbon's Brotherhood of Mercy in 1498 on the site of a former synagogue, and the elaborate Manueline portal the Brotherhood raised by 1534, carved with royal figures including Leonor herself.
