Botanical Garden of Lisbon

This guide to the Botanical Garden of Lisbon starts in 1873, when a German and a Frenchman, Edmund Goeze and Jules Daveau, were hired to lay out a hillside garden beside the old Polytechnic School using seeds and saplings shipped in from Portugal's colonial territories in Africa and Asia. Goeze laid out the ordered upper terraces while Daveau carved the winding lower paths, cascades and the long palm avenue. Look closely at the ancient, spiky cycads planted among them, a group of plants that once lived alongside the dinosaurs.
