Heritage of Cebu Monument

This guide to the Heritage of Cebu Monument follows sculptor Eduardo Castrillo, who raised memorials across the Philippines yet was never named a National Artist, as he took on ground in Cebu City where the city's first church once stood. It traces the plaza's history back to that torn-down church and through three years of casting bronze, brass, concrete and steel into a sprawling tableau, funded partly by Senator Marcelo Fernan. The finished scene moves from Rajah Humabon's baptism before a Spanish galleon to the fighters closing in on Ferdinand Magellan at Mactan.
