Cebu Taoist Temple

This guide to the Cebu Taoist Temple, built in 1972 by the city's Chinese community above Beverly Hills Subdivision, centers on a fortune-telling ritual still practiced here: two wooden blocks tossed on the floor, read by resident monks to answer a worshipper's question. It follows the community's decades-long push to build a permanent place of worship, modeled in part on the Great Wall of China, and the eighty-one steps devotees climb on Wednesdays and Sundays, one for every chapter of the Tao Te Ching. Look up as you climb and you will see dragons coiled along the rooflines in red and blue.
