Queen Street

This guide to Queen Street in Auckland follows a thoroughfare with a temper: an unemployment march that turned into looting in 1932, and a 1984 concert blackout that spilled ten thousand people into a night of riot police and flying bottles. Underneath it all runs the buried Waihorotiu stream, once a swamp Maori believed was guarded by a taniwha named Horotiu, and the stinking, flood-prone gully that early colonial shops were built along in 1841.
