Cornwall Park

This guide to Cornwall Park in Auckland follows Sir John Logan Campbell, a penniless young doctor who arrived in Auckland in 1853 and built the hillside then called Mount Prospect into a working farm of cattle, sheep and potatoes. It traces the loss of the estate's original lone tree, felled by a settler in 1852, and the grief over his daughter Ida's death in 1880 that led Campbell to give the land to the public in 1901, renaming it during a royal visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. He is buried on the summit beneath an epitaph borrowed from the architect Christopher Wren.
