Britomart

This guide to Britomart in Auckland starts with a headland that no longer exists: a Maori battle site called Te Rerenga Ora Iti, then Felton Mathew planting the Union Jack here in 1840 to found the city, with a fort and Saint Paul's church rising on top. It follows how, decades later, the growing colony needed fill dirt for a railway and reclamation project. Notice how flat the whole precinct is underfoot, on ground that was once a steep cliff edge.
