Auckland Zoo

This guide to Auckland Zoo tells the story of Jamuna, an elephant shipped from India as a gift not long after the zoo opened at Western Springs in December 1922, who spent over thirty years as the gentle favorite that keepers worked beside without a second thought. It follows one particular keeper, the man she trusted most, on an ordinary August afternoon in 1954, walking into her yard the way he had a thousand times before. The guide also wanders further back, to the zoo's early years of chimpanzees taking tea at long tables and giant pandas on loan.
