Auckland Harbor Bridge

This guide to the Auckland Harbour Bridge centres on a December 1958 storm, when a runaway barge carrying twelve hundred tons of unfinished bridge drifted loose on the Waitemata Harbour, and the small steam tug that held onto it for thirty-six hours until the wind dropped. Hundreds of workers built the bridge over four years, some sent out from England, others walking off the job in strikes in 1956 and '57. At least three of them fell to their deaths, their names now on a plaque under the northern end.
