Arataki Visitor Centre

This guide to Arataki Visitor Centre, gateway to Auckland's Waitakere Ranges, follows the removal of the original carved guardian pou in 2009 after rot hollowed it out, and the carving of its towering replacement by John Collins and Sunnah Thompson. You'll trace the six ancestors of Te Kawerau a Maki carved into its twelve meters, from Maki, who gave Auckland its Maori name, up to Tiriwa, for whom the ranges themselves are named.
