Amsterdam Museum

This guide to the Amsterdam Museum follows a fifteenth-century convent that the city seized after the 1578 Reformation and turned into a civic orphanage, placed deliberately on the busiest street so the city's merchants would see the children every day. Six male governors and four female governors ran the place, and were vain enough to commission formal portraits of themselves that still hang in these galleries.
