Pinang Peranakan Mansion

This guide to the Pinang Peranakan Mansion follows Chung Keng Kwee, who arrived in Malaya around 1841 as a twenty-year-old sent by his mother to find a father and brother lost to the tin mines. It traces how he rose through the Hai San secret society, fought the rival Ghee Hin over water rights and diggings, and was eventually made Kapitan China by the British. A dispute between two triad bosses over a plot on Church Street put this land in his hands, though he himself was Hakka Chinese, not Peranakan at all.
