Petaling Street Market

This guide to Petaling Street Market centers on Yap Ah Loy, the Hakka fighter and Kuala Lumpur's Chinese captain, who fled south after enemies captured the city in 1872 and returned the following March to find it in ruins. It follows what he built on this road to give desperate miners a reason to stay, and how the street earned its old name, Tapioca Factory Road. He died in 1885, never seeing the lantern-lit stalls that fill it today.
