Bukit Bintang

This guide traces Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur back past its shopping-and-nightlife strip to the hill it's named for and the vanished village beside it, then to Rose Chan, a Suzhou-born performer who rebuilt her act around an onstage mishap at a theater in Ipoh in 1952 and became a fixture of Saturday nights at BB Park, the amusement ground that once stood here. Those stages, on land now covered by a shopping mall, normally hosted Chinese opera before she took them over.
