This guide to the coastal path in Aewol follows twenty-nine men who set out by boat in 1770 for a government exam in Seoul, only to be blown off course by a storm all the way to the Ryukyu Islands. It traces the diary one survivor, Jang Han-cheol, wrote after finding his way home to this same stretch of coast, and what historians still learn from his account of the currents. You'll pass the stone marker raised in his memory on a bluff above the water, along the walk between Aewol's cafes and Gwakji Beach.
