Suga Shrine

This guide to Suga Shrine in Tokyo follows two gods who each landed on this small Shinjuku hill after being displaced elsewhere: a rice deity evicted during construction of Edo Castle's moat in 1634, and the storm god Susanoo, brought over a few years later after a local official was rewarded with the land for putting down a rebellion. The shrine's two names come from that history. Pause at the top of the plain stone staircase before heading back down.
