Nezu Shrine

This guide to Nezu Shrine in Tokyo follows Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth Edo shogun nicknamed the Dog Shogun for laws protecting stray animals, and the shrine he rebuilt in 1705 to mark naming his nephew Ienobu as heir. It traces how he modeled the result on Nikko Toshogu, the mausoleum of his ancestor Ieyasu, and conscripted feudal lords across the country to fund it. Walk left of the main hall to find a tunnel of roughly two hundred vermilion torii gates, each paid for by an individual worshipper.
